10 Tips To Help You Paint Your Home’s Interior and Exterior

colour2If you want to redecorate your home, one of the first things you will do is consider painting it. If you decide this is what you wish to do, then you keep in mind 10 things that can give you the best results possible.

10 Tips To Keep In Mind When Painting Your Home

Tip #1 - Home’s Style and Décor

Before you begin painting your home, consider the décor of it because it will make an impact on the color you choose. Determine what kind of statement you want to make. Do you want your home to look traditional? Perhaps you like the contemporary look? After you make your look determination and consider the other rooms of the home, choosing the color to paint with is much simpler. Always choose your look and then your paint color.

Tip #2 Determining The Mood

When you want to repaint a room, it’s important to determine what kind of feeling you want a person to have when they walk in this room. If you intend to have a person feel happy, dark colors such as dark blue or dark green just won’t do. With feelings of intimacy, you want colors that are dark. Be sure you choose the mood you want to create before you choose your colors.

Tip #3 Light Can Alter A Color’s Look

You finally have your colors picked out for the room you want to paint. However, you should keep one thing in prospective about painting your room. That is the color you decide to go with. Light makes a paint color look oddly different than the color that is in the paint can. How? When paint is exposed to a different light, it can look slightly different. If you have a room that will have a lot of natural light, you’ll want to go with blues and greens for a room color. However, rooms with little to no natural light should have warm colors. If you want to know how your room will look with the paint you choose, look at it in both sunlight and artificial light.

Tip #4 Compliment Your Home

You want to choose a color that will go with the rest of your home, not stand out. Make sure it is compatible with all the features you have including fixed features such as fireplaces and carpets. You also want it to blend in with curtains and furniture. You already know that purchasing paint is far less expensive than buying all new furniture. This is why it is imperative to choose the correct paint colors to go in your home.

Tip #5 Obtain Sample Cards

If you have a color in mind but aren’t quite sure if it would like right underneath the lighting in your room, obtain sample paint cards and hold them to the walls of your home. First, do it under the natural light and then again under the artificial light. Do you see any big difference? You can also get samples for everything that will be in the room so you can create a storyboard to help you make your final determination. When you do this, you are not wasting money.

Tip #6 Purchasing Enough Paint

One of the biggest mistakes a person can make when they purchase paints is not buying enough of it. If you are having a particular color painted on your wall (custom mixed) then you should purchase more than enough in case you need the color for touch ups down the road. Always purchase more than what you need because custom paint can be harder to make than plain old white.

Tip #7 Clear Out Furniture

Remember you want to paint your walls not your furniture so consider moving all of it out of the room before you start. If this is not a possibility, then cover the furniture with some kind of plastic tarp to keep the furniture protected from paint splatters. Be sure to keep the room ventilated so you don’t harm yourself by breathing in the paint fumes.

Tip #8 Quality Paint

You certainly don’t want to paint a room every few years, even if it is for touch ups. This is when you should purchase paint of high quality. You don’t want to waste your time or money with low quality paint that you will have to deal with in the near future.

Tip #9 Ready The Walls

Before you begin painting, it’s good to prepare the walls by cleaning off dirt spots. New paint has a bad habit of not sticking well to dirty walls so clean those walls first.

Tip #10 Paint Colors Are Powerful

Make a statement with your paint color but don’t go overboard. If you want to use colors to go bold on the room, do it. You can easily change the color of the room down the road if you find you don’t like it after all.
